I've just upgraded from Opera 10.01 to 10.53. Have been keeping the old but clean & cheerful 'Opera 9 Classic' skin. (When I want mostly-gray icons suitable for use in a funeral parlor, I'll let you know.) That's in C:\Documents and Settings\-user-\Application Data\Opera\Opera\skin\opera_9_classic_skin-2.zip Now after the upgrade there are (again) ugly borders added to the Address bar icons. Sigh, not again... There's a history to this. Same thing happened when going from version 9.63 to 10.01. Illustration: http://everist.org/pics/misc/20100501_Opera_1053_commented.jpg That time, after some searching, the solution was found in the earlier posts of this thread. http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=294012 Summary of original 'remove borders' fix (for Opera 10.01): ------ Standard skin is defined here in Windows: C:\Program Files\Opera\skin\standard_skin.zip Inside that zip, in directory 'border', overwrite two files with replacements from urls: addressbutton-back-hover.png http://files.myopera.com/micahrayaills/forum_stuff/addressbutton-back-hover.png button-back-hover.png http://files.myopera.com/micahrayaills/forum_stuff/button-back-hover.png These files are transparent/blank png's of the original button borders for the address bar in the Standard Opera Skin. If you still want a border when you hover the mouse over the addressbar icons, then only download and overwrite button-back-hover.png. ------ It worked for me. Nice clean icons restored. This time with 10.53, the contents of standard_skin.zip has been changed, and there are no matching files. So the past fix can't be used. Also, need a method that will (hopefully) not break with every new version. Reading 'tomu' comments at end of thread, decided to try the method of inserting [Addressbar button skin] into file skin.ini in C:\Documents and Settings\-user-\Application Data\Opera\Opera\skin\opera_9_classic_skin-2.zip Original zip file saved, etc. New version copied back. Works! Icons are now clean. Thought it worth posting 2nd verification that this works. You can probably tell from my illustration, that I've a few other gripes about creeping feature-itis in Opera. For instance: 1. How can I totally disable auto-upgrade checking, notification, etc. It's annoying, and I never want to upgrade unless there's some particular need. In this case I only upgraded because Flash video seems to have broken with Opera due to a recent Adobe update. (No the update didn't fix it.) 2. On the Menu bar, at far left there's a 'folder' icon that seems to be completely pointless. It was there in 9.63, gone in 10.01, and now it's back. It's clutter, and visually detracts from the clarity of where I prefer to keep a 'new window' icon on the address bar below. Any way to remove it? 3. Oh how I wish you'd sort out your tabs-vs-windows functional overlap. Some people prefer tabs, others windows. Whichever method people like and enable, they don't want clutter associated with the other method all over the place. I use 'new window' exclusively, and sure wish that second set of 'minimize/restore/close' symbols was gone from the upper right, where it keeps getting accidental mouse hits when the _real_ one was intended. 4. The 'speed dial' thing. Sigh. The world's full of programmers justifying their existence by implementing new ways of doing something that already had a perfectly good method. So lets weigh down Opera with a bunch of extra code, to achieve what is more easily and flexibly done with icons for commonly visited sites, organized in folder(s) on the Windows desktop. Anyway, how can I get rid of that annoying 'show speed dial' semi-pop-up at lower right? I don't ever want to see it again, because it's a reminder that apparently Opera project managers have a bad case of don't-know-when-to-stop. Oh, and the URL anticipation dropdown (whatever you call it) has now become FAR too busy and distracting. One line per item, please! You know what you've done here? By adding 'description' lines you've effectively allowed in advertising to this. Fantastic. And no bookmarks references either please - that's just over the top. If a person wants something from bookmarks, they know where that stuff is.
