http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=297013&t=1257840775&page=1#comment3179101 20091109 Have just upgraded from Opera 9.64 to 10.01. I prefer a simple, sparse look to skins (not to mention it better suiting my old eyes), so I'd kept the 'traditional' toolbar icons, and only have a few present. But now with 10.01, suddenly there are 'button outlines' around the icons. I find this superfluous, and would like to get rid of the outlines. Is this possible? Also, is there still a 'Go' icon that is just the word 'Go', instead of a > symbol? Sometimes there's simply no reason for symbolisation. Am very eager to find if this new version fixes the 'frequent total PC freeze' problem that the last few versions of Opera have had for me. Shows you how much I prefer Opera, that I'd put up with having to reboot typically once a day, for it. The machine never crashed, except with Opera running. Some sort of memory corruption problem related to mouse movements - every now and then, Opera's scroll bar would become garbage, that would change as I moved the mouse. But usually the memory trashing would be somewhere not visible, and simply hang the machine so badly that only the power switch would work. Edit: further on those 'button outlines'. The longer I'm stuck with these, the more annoying they are becoming. The whole concept of 'button outlines' around icons is retarded. Look, they are icons. Small images that can be clicked on to produce an action. It's a simple concept, been around for a very long time. Did you guys get confused just because someone chose to call them 'buttons' at some point? This is a classic case of adding a 'feature' just because you can, and it maybe seemed like a good idea at the time. But it adds code and screen clutter, aka pointless bloat. And if icons needed 'button outlines', by your logic, then all icons on the Windows desktop should have them too. Which is past ridiculous, well into stupid zone. How do I get rid of the damned button outlines? I notice if I select 'Windows native' skin, they are gone. But I'd prefer to keep the opera_9_classic_skin-2 ones I'm used too, and like the look of. Wouldn't mind a way to remove the 'turbo' and 'synchronize' icons in the status bar too. Unlikely to ever use them, more clutter. And while I'm complaining about superfluous stuff, did you guys ever consider producing a a cut down version without mail, chat, bookmarks, widgets, notes, download history, navigation bar, personal bar, speed dial, turbo, synchronize, and all the other frills I for one never ever use? It would be so nice to have a nice clean, small, simple browser like Opera was in the beginning. Re bookmarks - that's right, I don't use them at all. Through long and painful experience, I've found the only reliable and organized way to keep links is in text files, located in folders for the topics of interest. No formatting hassles, I can add any notes I want, they never get lost when changing browsers, they are there and the same regardless of what browser I'm using, and they are uniformly searchable and permanently available from other applications. -------------------- 20091111 Mod: "Off-topic comment removed by moderator. Please review the forum rules before posting." OK, replacing just the clearly on-topic parts. Will find a better place for the other comments on Opera. Or are you in fact objecting to my criticism of the addition of button outlines? Quoting from original post, minus some intensity: ------- Have just upgraded from Opera 9.64 to 10.01. They deleted that too! Found another thread in which the exact same question is asked. http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=291642&t=1257944634&page=1#comment3180528 http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=291642&t=1257949017&page=1 Posted: OK, I have the same question - how to remove the button outlines that appear in Opera 10? I already asked in the 'Opera 10 buttons' thread, which seemed like a logical place for it. But my question got deleted - twice. Here's an illustration of what I mean. Not sure how to inset images here, let's try... http://everist.org/pics/misc/Opera_button_query.jpg Hmm... "[img]" tags don't work here? This thread is evidence that I'm not the only one 'failing to spot the supposedly obvious answer.' ------------ Ah ha! Found another thread "Address bar buttons" http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=294012 in which: ----- The standard skin is located here in Windows: C:\Program Files\Opera\skin Copy the standard_skin.zip file to a different directory. (Note: You should definitely create a backup or rename the original.) Paste it into a temp folder (example: C:\Skin Temp) Unzip it, and locate this directory: border Download the files below and paste them into the border directory (overwriting the originals) addressbutton-back-hover.png http://files.myopera.com/micahrayaills/forum_stuff/addressbutton-back-hover.png button-back-hover.png http://files.myopera.com/micahrayaills/forum_stuff/button-back-hover.png These files are transparent/blank png's of the original button borders for the address bar in the Standard Opera Skin. If you still want a border when you hover the mouse over the addressbar icons, then only download and overwrite button-back-hover.png. After you have overwritten the original file(s) above From inside the border folder, go up/back one directory Select all files, and add all folders/file(s) to a zip file. Rename the zip file to standard_skin.zip Close Opera (if running) Paste the zip file you just created into C:\Program Files\Opera\skin overwriting the original standard skin file. Run Opera, and if you done these steps successfully, then you should no longer see the button borders. If anything gets messed up, you can always copy the backup you created of standard_skin.zip and paste it into the skin directory restoring the skin to it's default. Just remember, you have to close Opera before you can overwrite standard_skin.zip. ---OR--- Comment out this line in the skin.ini: ...under [Addressbar Button Skin] Tile Center = border/button-back-hover.png Works for the standard skin, though it's probably a better idea to copy it to 'opera:config#Skin Directory' directory, rename it and make the changes there. ------- Now to try it. Too bad this has to be done on all the different PCs I run. EDIT: Yay, it works. The first method, replacing standard_skin.zip Welcome back, nice clean looking icons. The second suggestion seems to bear no resemblance to anything in Opera 10. No such file, no such strings. Minus ten points to whoever had the bright idea of adding those borders in the first place. ----------------- Posted in the original 'Opera 10 Buttons' thread: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=297013 For anyone who's wondering "How to remove the unsightly square outlines from the address bar buttons in Opera 10?" and thinks (like I did) this thread seems a logical place to ask, the answer is here: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=291642&t=1257949017&page=1
