However, given the continuing problems with Windows, the idea of having a "virtual computer" inside my computer that I cannot get to and fix when it shows the same degree of unreliability troubles me. Indeed if the industry chooses to go forward with this concept, I think it needs to be coupled with the return of product liability to computer hardware and software so that if this "trusted computer" makes a mistake and disables a legally owned copy of software at a critical time for ones business, that it will be possible to sue the makers of the virtual computer for damages. We need product liability in the computer industry. The deplorable state of software quality does not exist because the industry cannot do any better but because they have no reason to do any better. Before we allow untouchable "trusted computing" into our homes and businesses, we need legal protection from the mistakes the creators of such systems always seem to make in these new products. ==== Longhorn ==== Was Microsoft's DRM/trusted computing platform, that became Vista. Which tried to do trusted computing, but without some of the necessary hardware fortification - against the user. Hence all the horrible Vista issues of media stream quality degradation to certain 'untrusted' I/O devices. http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,4248,1332766,00.asp Longhorn/Palladium release in 2006 (or later) 20050326 http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/longhorn_preview_2005.asp#roadmap The Road to Windows "Longhorn" 2005 http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/longhorn.asp 20080222 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/22/eff_unbitlocker/ Security boffins unveil BitUnlocker Disk encryption decrypted
