http://www.non-gm-farmers.com/news_details.asp?ID=2778 Genetically Engineered Crops May Produce Herbicide Inside Our Intestines But one study on the pat gene raises all sorts of red flags. German scientist Hans-Heinrich Kaatz demonstrated that the pat gene can transfer into the DNA of gut bacteria. He found his evidence in young bees that had been fed pollen from glufosinate-tolerant canola plants. The pat gene transferred into the bacteria and yeast inside the bees' intestines. Kaatz said, "This happened rarely, but it did happen."[28] Although no studies have looked at whether pat genes end up in human gut bacteria, the only human GM-feeding study ever conducted did show that genetic material can transfer to our gut bacteria. This study, published in 2004, confirmed that portions of the Roundup-tolerant gene in soybeans transferred to microorganisms within the human digestive tract.[29] Since the pat gene can transfer to gut bacteria in bees, and since genetic material from another GM crop can transfer to human gut bacteria, it is likely that the pat gene can also transfer from Liberty Link corn or soybeans to our intestinal flora. If so, a key question is whether the presence of the pat gene confers some sort of survival advantage to the bacteria. If so, "selection pressure" would favor its long term proliferation in the gut. Their comments follow the issuing yesterday in Britain of the world's largest study of the ecological impact of GM crops, which revealed significant declines in bees and butterflies. Posted May 7, 2007 10:25 AM PST Category: SCIENCE/HEALTH Note that the companies and scientists who make their living off of GM crops are scrambling to downplay this report. http://disc.server.com/discussion.cgi?id=149495;article=110861;show_parent=1 Proof Bees Dying From GM Crops? Research by a leading German zoologist has shown that genes used to genetically modify crops can jump the species barrier, newspapers reported here on Sunday. A three-year study by Professor Hans-Heinrich Kaatz at the University of Jena found that the gene used to modify oil-seed rape had transferred to bacteria living inside honey bees. The findings will undermine claims by the biotech industry and supporters of GM foods that genes cannot spread. Bees may be the fuzzy, buzzing creatures humans try to avoid, but without them, there would be nothing to pollinate our fruit, the plants livestock eat, the cane to make sugar, even coffee. "Without the bees, there is no life, there is no food to eat," said McLaury. "So we're going to get real hungry really soon without bees." Posted Apr 8, 2008 01:19 PM PST Category: SCIENCE/HEALTH It is an established fact that pollen from genetically modified plants is harmful to insects. http://www.globalchange.com/monarch.htm Bees that are not exposed to genetically altered plants seem to avoid Colony Collapse Disorder. But as beekeepers are hired to transport their hives from farm to farm to farm, exposure to genetically modified crops becomes inevitable. http://www.i-sis.org.uk/honeyBeeOrganicFarming.php Saving the Honeybee Through Organic Farming In conclusion, sub-lethal levels of pesticides, including the Bt biopesticides produced in genetically modified (GM) crops covering some 30 percent of the global area, disorientate the bees, making them behave abnormally, and compromise their immunity to infections. Posted Apr 26, 2008 08:20 AM PST http://rinf.com/alt-news/environmental-news/the-bees-diethe-planet-dies/111/ The Bees Die...The Planet Dies am speaking about the extermination of the bees - on which depends 80 % of the pollination of cultivated plants - by Imidaclopride which Bayer sells under the name of Gaucho to the farmers to coat seeds and to protect them from certain diseases... This product paralyses insects such as bees which cannot return to the hive and they therefore die. When they do succeed, the honey which results from it is toxic (because it's poisoned). In less than three years, 450 000 hives were thus lost and production of honey fell from 45 000 tons to 25 000 tons in France. In Alsace, bee-keepers are regarded as disaster victims because of the Bayer products. In addition, it should be known that in Europe, approximately 4 000 vegetable species have their life assured thanks to pollination by bees. Last year's survey commissioned by the Apiary Inspectors of America found losses of about 32%. As beekeepers travel with their hives this spring to pollinate crops around the country, it's clear the insects are buckling under the weight of new diseases, pesticide drift and old enemies like the parasitic varroa mite, said Dennis vanEngelsdorp, president of the group. Yet this is never mentioned in the media discussions of what happened to the bees. More telling, during the conference in 1999 at which this paper was announced, the media reported that the study said Monarch butterflies were safe from GM crops before the conference itself had even finished debating the report! 20100503 http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/may/02/food-fear-mystery-beehives-collapse Fears for crops as shock figures from America show scale of bee catastrophe The world may be on the brink of biological disaster after news that a third of US bee colonies did not survive the winter 20100908 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/7980954/Bee-decline-already-having-dramatic-effect-on-pollination-of-plants.html GKD comment: Something occurs to me. Here we are in age where global companies like Monsanto are marketing hybrid 'terminator' seeds which are sterile at 2nd generation, thus requiring farmers to buy new seedstock every year. Where GM'd and even normally bred crops are patented, and it is widely illegal for farmers to keep seeds for next year's crop even when they are fertile. Where it's obvious that corporations feel they have a right to force the world's people to pay them over and over for the privilege of eating. In this context, why wouldn't the corporations decide it might be a good idea to try and eliminate 'the competition' - the ability of natural systems to pollinate traditional food crops over and over, every year, for free? Maybe killing off the bees was someone's idea of profit margin improvement? There's motive; method would be by marketing crops that exude pesticides deadly to bees. Nice and deniable, especially if you control the panels allocating research funding. I think we've been had. Again. Wish I could think of a way to globally market products deadly to the existence of corporations. ------------ http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/07/science/07bees.html?_r=1 Scientists and Soldiers Solve a Bee Mystery http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/10/bee_mystery_unsolved_lead_inve.html Bee Mystery Unsolved?
